Alba Bikes

What does it mean? Who are we?

We often get asked, why Alba?

Alba is a nod to our roots and refers to the native name of Scotland, spoken roughly as AL-uh-buh or AL-a-puh.

This is why you will also see the white cross of the Saltire Flag adorning our logo, and references to unique Scottish creatures and legends within our service packages.

  • Our Origins

After spending time travelling the globe, seeing cool places, Gordon returned home to Scotland in 2014 and found work in Sustainable Travel and Active Transportation.

This was the first foray into a new world, where cycling was seen not only as a recreational activity but also a mode of transport for people and cargo!

    ***

Working over the next 5 years with schools and community organisations across Scotland and UK a passion for working in this setting was becoming deeply rooted.

    ***

Alba Bikes was launched initially as a side hustle, alongside other employment but as opportunities presented and reputation for good service the side hustle became a full time endeavor.

    ***

With years of customer service, retail and outdoor instruction in skiing, hiking, climbing and of course cycling, having a full-time office job was never going to land nicely.

  • Sustainable

Soon after kids arrived in the family, kids trailers and cargo bikes soon became a frequent sight in the household, transporting kids to childcare, along with conducting local errands from carrying shopping or parcels to/from home.

    ***

Cargo bikes are now firmly embedded within the Alba Bikes household, both as a means of transporting children across Hamilton, but also how we conduct our daily business operations

    ***

Part of the vision for Alba Bikes is to demonstrate that bikes can in some cases offer a viable alternative to vehicle usage both for family transport but also for businesses. Looking to other global markets New Zealand has many opportunities to increase the use of micro-mobility devices, such as cargo bikes, trikes and quadracycles in our towns and cities to help reduce congestion, improve air quality and in most cases reduce cost.
